A colorful wall mural of Hawaiian deities painted by Herb Kawainui Kane has been restored at Jaggar Museum in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
The restoration was made possible by an $8,000 grant from Tourism Cares and a $1,600 donation and 32 hours of service by the nonprofit Friends of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
The large mural, titled “A Pantheon of Volcano Spirits,” depicts volcano goddess Pelehonuamea, her brother and shark god Kamohoalii, rival demigod Kamapuaa, and other Hawaiian deities affiliated with volcanoes.
Kane’s mural, now brighter and more colorful thanks to the restoration, was being admired Tuesday by numerous visitors to the Jaggar Museum.
Kane, one of the most beloved artists in Hawaii, passed away in 2011. Several pieces of Kane’s art are displayed in the national park for the public to enjoy.
Tourism Cares’ mission is to preserve and enhance travel experiences for future generations.
